Whether you’re graduating from college, moving to your first apartment as a couple, or putting extra belongings in a unit while you remodel, packing can be a stressful situation for anyone. But, with the right supplies, and Premium Spaces on your side, your packing and moving experience will be a cinch.
Before you even start packing, make a plan. It’s never too early to start thinking about where you’ll store things during a move, who will help you move, or what supplies you’ll need. Though you may think a couple of boxes and a roll of tape will be enough to keep you organized during packing, there are actually many more tools you should gather. Thankfully, your friends at Premium Spaces are here to help.
Though boxes aren’t the only tool you’ll need to pack, they are probably the most essential. But it can be hard to decide how many boxes you need or even what types of boxes to get. In general, you can estimate how many boxes you’ll need by household size.
A small studio apartment will need around 20 boxes while a four-bedroom house could require upwards of 120. Do your research on how many boxes you may need depending on the size of your home and the type of items you’ll need to pack up.
You should also aim to get a variety of sizes of sturdy boxes. Smaller boxes are great for loose trinkets while a larger box can hold something like bedding. Other types of boxes you may need are more specialized and created to hold items like fragile dishes, televisions, or hanging wardrobe items.
2. Bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and packing paper
Bubble wrap and packing paper are essential items for protecting fragile items from getting chipped or broken in transit. Packing peanuts are also a great tool for filling any gaps in your boxes once you’ve gotten them as full as you can. Another option for filling any gaps is making use of your bedding and linens. You can even get a little extra packing done at the same time!
Tape is essential for sealing any seams in boxes to make them as durable as possible.
You’ll likely need one roll of tape for every 30 or so boxes; plan accordingly.
4. Scissors & Box Cutter
Though more likely to be used when unpacking than when packing, a pair of strong scissors and a box cutter are still nice to have on hand. Use these tools for cutting pieces of tape or resizing boxes for specialized use.
Packing up everything neatly into boxes is almost pointless unless you label them properly. Have a few extra thick, permanent markers on hand to label the contents of each box.
6. Trash bags
You can never have too many trash bags on hand while moving. Whether to actually put trash in or to throw odd-shaped pillows or a few extra clothing items into, trash bags are the perfect multi-purpose tool for packing.
